How can we gather data and present it in an organized way to share information with others?
Project description:
Students cooperatively plan and create a survey using Google Docs. They gather data using their survey. They create a data table using Microsoft Word and a bar graph using "Create a Graph" to display their data in an organized way. Finally, they cooperatively create a Voicethread presentation to present the project and tell what they learned from their survey. http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/default.aspx
Work Samples:
Here are some samples.
You can view them "Full size" if you wish.
Students demonstrated learning of the MST standards, including collection of data, organizing and displaying data, and analyzing data. They also learned to use the technology including Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Create a Graph and Voicethread.
Unanticipated learning included cooperative learning skills, and numerous ELA skills including public speaking.
It was useful to both teachers and students to stay focused on the driving question throughout a lengthy project. We were amazed at the level of independence our students achieved during this project. The students were fully engaged in most aspects of the project. The task of analyzing the data and creating a presentation was the most difficult piece. Some pairs of students took several sessions to write the presentation. As always, reading level and ability became a factor.
